                                    Welcome From the Principal

Thank you for visiting our website and welcome to our school. South Highlands has the distinction of being the highest achieving elementary school in the district and one of the highest in the state. We are the only elementary school in Louisiana designated a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence TWICE by the U.S. Department of Education, and we have the honor of being named as a National Magnet School of Excellence by Magnet School's of America. South Highlands is also a Top Gains and Equity Honoree School recognized by the Louisiana Department of Education. We have also been designated an Arts Integration Model School for Louisiana A+ Schools in conjunction with The George Rodrigue Foundation.

We are very proud of our school for all of our academic accomplishments, but we are even more proud of the loving, nurturing, and family-oriented environment we provide. We believe all children are gifted and talented in unique ways, and consider it our mission to support them academically, socially, and emotionally enabling them to reach their full individual potential. Our dedicated faculty, supportive parents, and talented students work together to make South Highlands the very best!

Built in 1922, students attending South Highlands have entered the doors of 831 Erie Street for almost 100 years. While many things have changed over the years at South Highlands, our philosophy remains unchanged: academic excellence, through the performing arts, in a child-centered and nurturing environment. The legacy is South Highlands.

If I can help you in any way or answer any questions, please feel free to email me or call the school. I am so proud of our school, and I would love your family to be a part of our rich history and legacy.

South Highlands Magnet is one of only 14 schools in Louisiana selected to be named a George Rodrigue Foundation/Louisiana A+ Schools arts integration school.  We are the ONLY school that has been designated as the George Rodrigue Arts Integration Lab School. Seven of our teachers, as well as our principal, are LAA+ Fellows and work to train other teachers across the state in arts integration strategies. Our principal, Mary Harris, was also awarded the Arts Education State Award by the Lt. Governor for her contribution and promotion of the arts in schools.
