Our Legacy and Points of Pride
2016-2017 Student of the Year
Welcome to our school.
South Highlands was built in 1922 and was a neighborhood school until 1981. In 1981 South Highlands became an academic and performing arts magnet school with an emphasis on the arts. Our school has the distinction of being the highest achieving elementary school in the state and is the only school in Louisiana designated a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence TWICE by the U.S. Department of Education.
You will not find a more loving, nurturing, and family-oriented environment for your child. Not only is South Highlands known for its academic achievement, but we also excel in giving back to others in our local and global community. Our dedicated faculty, supportive parents, and talented students work as a cohesive team to create academically and socially aware student leaders who care about others. Together, we give our best and achieve the most! This is the legacy that is South Highlands.
Thank you for visiting our website today. If I can help you in any way or answer any questions you might have please feel free to call the school.
South Highlands Elementary Magnet Named a National PTA School of Excellence
South Highlands Elementary Magnet has just been named as a National PTA School of Excellence for the 2015-17 school years. National PTA’s School of Excellence is a program that supports and celebrates partnerships between PTAs and schools to improve the educational experience and school environment for every child. As a National PTA School of Excellence, South Highlands families feel welcomed and empowered to support student success, and PTA is a key partner for continuous school improvement. This program provides guidance to assist school in engaging families in the school decision-making, and helps school build inclusive policies related to education, health, safety or the arts.
Courtyard Beautification Project - a South Highlands Foundation initiative.
The South Highlands Foundation is pleased to announce approval of its Courtyard Beautification Project and invites the families and friends of South Highlands to be a part of its efforts. The goal of the project is to enhance the grounds of the school while simultaneously establishing an endowment fund through brick sales and sponsorships to ensure the future financial stability of the Foundation's efforts to meet student and classroom needs.
We invite you, family members, friends, neighbors, and previous South Highlands Students to purchase a commemorative brick to honor a child, recognize your family, remember a loved one or a special day, or show your support for a teacher at South Highlands Magnet School.
Your purchase will not only help us to fund programs for our students, it will become a permanent part of the school. Proceeds from this project will go directly toward meeting the growing needs of the school, and your brick purchase will be tax deductible.
The Courtyard Beautification Project which will consist of a new walkway in front of the school and a courtyard area. There will be benches and trees along the way so that students will be able to sit and read or have a picnic, and families will have a nice walkway to enter the Performing Arts Center (PAC). The residents on Erie will have a beautiful courtyard area to view as well. You should have received a packet in the mail concerning this project! If you have not, please call the office.
